Cape Town, South Africa

Only in Cape Town can you ring in the New Year with a starlit picnic atop one of the world’s most beautiful natural wonders, Table Mountain. As the city erupts into celebration below, take in unobstructed, panoramic views as the fireworks light up the harbor. The next morning, the celebration continues as locals flock to the beaches and 10,000 performers parade through the streets.

Nassau, Bahamas

End the last day of the year getting sun-kissed, floating in the clear blue ocean on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. At night, join the Junkanoo festivities, reminiscent of a tropical, Bahamian Mardi Gras. The colorful, lively street parades lead to beach parties and firework displays around the island.

Reykjavík, Iceland

Gather around bonfires lit throughout the capital of Iceland while toasting to the New Year and watching fireworks from all ends of the city. The signature bonfires symbolically represent the burning away of the previous year’s troubles. After the clock strikes midnight, everyone heads for the bars and clubs where live music lasts until the next morning.

Valparaíso, Chile

Home to the largest New Year’s Eve show in Latin America, Valparaíso features a 20-minute firework display launched from 17 points along Chile’s coast. For good luck, locals eat a dozen grapes at the stroke of midnight, wear yellow underwear and put a thousand peso bill in their shoes. After the show, over a million partygoers make their way to the sandy shores for a dance party that goes until the sun comes up.

Kitzbühel, Austria

Kitzbühel is a snow-bunny’s paradise, and the perfect European alternative to Aspen. Hit the slopes fora torch light show and pyrotechnic fireworks display before an après-ski toast. Revelers then crowd the town bars where live music fills the streets below the mountains.Photo Courtesy of Kitzbühel.com
